As I was reading about the many different methods used to get your dog glucosamine I thought about the very many delivery methods. Such as the one I prefer is liquid glucosamine as it absorbs directly into your dogs blood stream and then is delivered directly to your dogs joints where it can begin to rebuild lost or damaged cartilage.

Really its whatever works for you and your dog, Liquid glucosamine can work for you as it is mixed with dry dog food, but what happens if your dog doesn’t like that?

What are the other methods that we can explore ?

Powdered glucosamine – This can also be made into sauces or even just sprinkled on your dogs food.

Glucosamine tablets – These are usually pressed little nuggets that are packed with glucosamine. Think treats.

Liquid glucosamine – There are different versions of this form, some that you can mix in water, some that are more solid and cannot be mixed in water but can be added to your dogs food.

I have tried all of these some with different variances of success, the one that I’ve stuck with is the Liquid Glucosamine. My dog doesn’t mind having it poured on top of her dog food, the Syn-flex I use is orange flavored and I guess to her that’s considered human food.

Read the directions on what dosage to give your dog depending on their weight.

And when you should do this, or what stage of life ?

(I despise putting a life expectancy on a dogs life but for this example) If your dogs estimated life expectancy is 1-14 years then obviously then by age 7 which would be the middle of that expected life span would be considered the geriatric stage of life. Not depending upon what breed they are or what size of dog they are.

The reason we are researching and testing all these products is to extend your dogs life expectancy. There are some dogs now that are hitting age 21 never have we heard of such a older dog, but more power to that dog and their owners!

Advantages

What are some of the advantages of glucosamine as a treatment for that beloved family member? Dogs age much like people, and if their level of activity is high and their diet good they can remain very flexible and mobile for years. But like most of us, with age the family pet begins to slow down; their joints become stiff and sore; tendons wear, and older dogs can even develop arthritis. Doesn’t your dog’s health deserve to be respected and nurtured like any other esteemed member of the family in their golden years? You can do that with glucosamine for dogs.

What Causes the Problems?

One of the problems your pet pooch may encounter in more mature years is caused by the very thing that he loves most: red meat. There are high levels of uric acid in red meat, which is a major contributor to arthritis-type problems as well as natural deterioration and aging. It is precisely to counter that unfortunate effect that glucosamine for dogs is becoming increasingly available and popular with pet owners.

The Cure

A dog’s glycosaminoglycans are part of the ground structure of the all-important connective tissue that runs the entire length of its body. They need glucosamine to protect their health and well-being and maintain the strength and flexibility in their joints and connective tissue.

There are many different types of glucosamine available for dogs, all fast absorbing, so it doesn’t take a long time to notice a vast improvement in the dog’s reaction to it. You’ll be glad you started him on this supplement as you notice a new swing in your dog’s step.

In 1999, glucosamine was the top selling product in dietary supplements. It is safe and effective for dogs as well as people, although dosages differ, so you should consult a veterinarian on the correct amount for your particular breed.

Oral glucosamine has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce arthritic conditions in older pets, so the use of glucosamine is both curative and preventive. Glucosamine can help to relieve other age-related issues in your pet, such as tendonitis, osteo-arthritis, tendon/ligament repair, carpal tunnel syndrome and even skin-wound healing.

Glucosamine sulfate, as well as a supplement called Glucosamine Hydrochloride, help glycosaninoglyans hold more fluid; this helps to increase the resilience and flexibility of the dog’s joints. Glucosamine sulfate also supports the repair of torn ligaments and tendons. A glucosamine and chondroitin formula, brand name Cosequin, seems to have a first-rate effect on treating swelling, inflammation and stiffness.

How to Use Glucosamine for Dogs

You can purchase glucosamine in a tablet form to feed to your pet. It also comes in a capsule you can break open and sprinkle in the dog’s food or a liquid that can be poured over it. There are different dosages recommended for different size dogs but this supplement is for all breeds of dogs as long as they are six months of age or over.

Glucosamine is the basic molecule which makes up Chondroitin. Chondroitin is one of the building blocks of cartilage. So without the proper amounts of Glucosamine, cartilage will have difficulty in regenerating itself. Cartilage is constantly being worn down and regenerated. As a dog gets older, this process accelerates and the dog needs more Glucosamine to maintain the regeneration process.

We have first-hand knowledge of the powerful effects of Glucosamine with Chondroitin. My old dog, Storm, almost died from taking aspirin. We were giving him an aspirin a day (as suggested by the vet) and all was great for a few weeks. Then one day he became deathly ill because the aspirin had caused an intestinal infection. After Storm’s problems with aspirin, we started him on Liquid Glucosamine and have been extremely pleased with the results. There are absolutely no side effects or dangers to worry about when giving your dog Glucosamine.

Below I have outlined what Chondroitin is and how it is beneficialto your dog:

Chondroitin has an anti-inflammatory effect just like Glucosamine. Chondroitin is naturally produced by the body, and is necessary for joint integrity and for preventing destructive enzymes from harming joint tissue. Chondroitin also improves the elasticity of blood vessels which improves circulation. Chondroitin also has been found to improve the movement of white blood cells which aid in fighting off infections.

Chondroitin sulfate has also been found to ease the pain of arthritis in dogs. Not only does it offer pain relief, many studies have shown it to actually reverse the damage caused by the arthritis by increasing cartilage growth. Chondroitin also promotes the healing of bone tissue in the case of broken bones.

The only real source for Chondroitin sulfate is from animal cartilage. Shark cartilage is often the source from which Chondroitin supplement are made.

Steve Weber has many years of experience dealing with old dogs who suffer from arthritis.

His Website at http://www.CactusCanyon.com was created for helping people with old dogs who have developed arthritis.

When your dog is in pain, it can be really hard on you. If you had him from a puppy, you probably remember when he used to jump around without a care in the world. Now it’s becoming difficult for him to do something simple like walk or stand up from a sitting position. Luckily, there are several dog pain relief options that you can find to ease the arthritic pain of your pet.

Aspirin can be a wonderful pain reliever for dogs with arthritis. Make sure that you don’t give the dog too much so that you can avoid an overdose. Keep in mind that aspirin can cause some unwanted side effects such as stomach upset in your pooch.

Heat has been able to give relief for arthritis for many years now. Giving your dog a nice warm bath can provide him with temporary relief. Getting him a heated blanket can also work wonders for helping to relieve the stiffness and pain associated with arthritis.

Your vet will be able to prescribe some medication that you can give your dog to help him relieve pain. Unfortunately these medications can be quite expensive, and often come with their own set of unwanted side effects.

One of the best dog pain relief options is natural supplements like Pet Bounce can help give your dog relief so that he can get back to being himself again. It is an orally taken medication in the form of drops, which makes it easier for your pooch to get it into their system.

It is important that you choose one of the dog pain relief options for your pet so that they no longer have to live with the pain and discomfort of arthritis. None of these options are difficult, and your pet will thank you for it.

Jade Volstrom is an expert on dog pain relief and the director of PetPainReliefInfo.Com. She provides honest information and advice on matters like pet pain relief and more.
